One of my favorite movies is Dead Poets Society. I know--not surprising: a film that focuses on an English teacher who loves poetry is a favorite film of mine. But lately, in light of the pandemic, I have been thinking a lot about how to be an inspirational teacher when there is no shared space. No physical classroom. Similtaniously, I've been trying to process this through writing.
Last week, it led to me draftingt the poem "Dead Poets Struggle", which is now published on The Dewdrop, an online literary digest. In other words, in trying to figure out how to inspire all of my students, I found myself instead inspired by all of them. That's what so many not in the world of eduction don't understand: while our students need their teachers, we teachers need our students, too. |
